Laptop vs. Desktop

We are about to purchase a new computer and I could really use some advice.  I'm trying to decide between a desktop and a laptop.

Arguing for the desktop: We have an iPad, two iPhones, a Kindle Fire, and M has a MacBook Pro through work.  So we're pretty much set on mobile computer devices.  It would be nice to have a stationary computer in our office with a large screen.  Also, it just feels more grown-up to me.  And it's about $500-1000 cheaper than the laptop, depending on the configuration we go with.

Arguing for the laptop:  Do desktops seem kind of archaic?  I already have a lovely, large screen iMac at work.  And what if I want to blog whilst sitting on the couch or lounging in bed?  I can't do that on a desktop and I can't do that on any of my other mobile devices.  I technically could do it from M's laptop, but I don't like mixing personal shizz with business shizz.

I'm torn.  What do you have?  Do you like it?  What do you recommend?  Do you feel strongly one way or the other?  Computers are $$$ so I really don't want to buy one and then a month later be like, "Whoopsie! Wrong decision!"

Help me!

This is a super tough decision--I have a MacBook Pro, which I love, but part of me wonders if I would prefer a desktop. I agree that it seems more grown-up. I don't have an iPad (yet), but can you blog on that?

This is on our short term To Buy list! We have a tiny macbook air, and then we each have PCs for our work laptops. We're really wanting to get a large-screen Mac desktop with lots of storage.

I say go for the desktop! I have a lot of portable electronic devices myself and as soon as my current personal laptop bites the dust I am going with a desktop. I think it's more grownup and it would be nie to have something stationary and with a large screen.

I vote for the desktop. Not only is having a large screen much nicer (I even use my 27" screen to watch movies) but it's also a more powerful computer. I also like that it's not portable because then it forces me to shut it down and not be on it all the time, which is the problem I have with my MacBook and iPad. Sometimes it's nice for technology to not be portable!

Agreed that the Desktop seems more grown-up. I love my Macbook Pro and I think I'd ultimately go with that for portability reasons. Sometimes an iPad just won't do it and I need a computer.

M and I both have our own laptops to do our own thing. Never feel the need for a desk top.. plus the whole I have to be sitting where the desktop is vs the laptop sits where I sit. I would consider a desktop when children are older and I need to keep on eye on what they are googling but no need for one now.. sorry for the ramble.. hope it helps.

Does a desktop have more memory? Should I know the answer to that? I don't have a desktop and I'm in need of a new laptop so I'm having the same delimma. I feel like I always have to get a new laptop every couple, which is super annoying so I might try the desktop next. I need more room for pics too.

I have a 17" MacBook Pro now and am waiting with baited breath for the new 27" iMac next month. My MPB is fine but I need a larger HD and I'm drooling over the huge screen. If you're an Apple person I just think you get so much more value with the iMacs than the MacBooks.
