Five on Friday

1. OMG YES. The morning after our wedding we invited people to join us for brunch at one of my favorite restaurants in my hometown, Thelma's Chicken and Waffles. Last year when we spent a weekend in Montreal, we noticed that Southern food was kind of trendy there (weird, right?) and went to a little hipster dive for brunch that served us cheese grits, beignets, and, you guessed it, chicken and waffles. A former colleague and I have bonded over a shared love of chicken and waffles and spent a not-insignificant amount of time debating the merits of the Lay's Chicken and Waffles-flavored potato chip.

All of this is to say, I freaking LOVE chicken and waffles and will be making this cake at some point. Would it be weird to bake my own 30th birthday cake? Because this is the perfect birthday cake. Can you imagine it using Chick-fil-a chicken nuggets?!? Oh. Em. Gee. Next level deliciousness.

2. It's the time of year to start thinking about Christmas cards! Or at least it is for me anyways. And of course my annual goal of having somebody take a picture of us and the dogs to use for the card remains unaccomplished. I know there's still time, but we're going on 3 years of marriage and this has yet to be done. I'm doubtful. Anyhoo the past few years I have used LivingSocial or Groupon to purchase our cards. Or more accurately, I've purchased deals through them to get our cards. While I do love all the pretty paper happening over at Minted, I do not love all the $$$ they require for something that, at best, will be on someone's fridge for 3 weeks. The first year we did this, I got a Shutterfly deal, so it was a company I was familiar with and I had no hesitations about the quality or customer service. Last year I bought a Groupon to a company I had never heard of and I was a bit nervous, but our cards turned out great! The company was super nice and easy to work with.

This week, LivingSocial is running another deal. It's another company I haven't heard of or worked with, but a.) using the EXTRA10 promo code got my purchase of 70 cards down to about 37 cents a card and b.) the company has some seriously cute card offerings. I'm willing to take the risk. If you're willing to take the gamble as well, would you pretty please use my link so I can maybe get my cards for free? And then share the love with your peeps and get some free cards for yourself!

3. Pure Barre is coming to Burlington! I realize we're about 5 years late to this party, but I'm so excited to start classes when it opens in November. Any Pure Barre fans out there? Tell me how it has magically transformed you into a Victoria's Secret model so I can justify the price + early AM wake-up calls.
4. The most perfect scene from a walk with the dogs this week. Vermont fall is awesome. Sometimes it is very surreal to me that we actually live here. (Remind me of this feeling of awe and gratitude in 3 months when it's below zero out.)

5. Has anyone ever bought/used one of these molded loaf pans? I'm normally not a fan of kitchen things that can only be used to make one thing specific to a season or holiday, as storage space is at a premium in our teeny tiny kitchen. But pumpkin bread is one of my favorite fall treats to make and I've wanted one of these pans for years. A friend gave me a Williams-Sonoma gift certificate for my birthday and I'm thinking about pulling the trigger, but if they are a total pain in the ass to use (i.e. no amount of greasing and flouring gets the bread to come out looking like it's supposed to), I could still be talked out of it...

Friday Favorites

Did you watch Westminster? I try to watch every year, since I am a major dog person.  We always root for the sporting and hound groups {I grew up with bird dogs and now own 2 coonhounds}, but I have to say, Swagger, the Old English Sheepdog stole my heart last night. What a cutie!  And all of those Purina commercials left me a blubbering mess.  As one of the commentators said, the real Best in Show is the dog curled up next to you on the couch.

I'm making two things this weekend from scratch that I never have before: pizza dough and marshmallows.  I'll be using this recipe for the pizza dough and this recipe for the marshmallows. I'm a little nervous, but excited for the results.  Any tips or tricks for me?

I am getting super antsy for spring to get here and one thing I always look forward to is magnolia blooms. It's theeeee most heavenly fragrance.  Until then, I'm dying to get my hands on one of these Magnolia + Rosewood candles from Sydney Hale Company. They got a nod from Garden and Gun AND they donate 10% of their profits to animal rescue. Sign me up!

How sweet are these prints from The First Snow?  They'd be a great wedding gift, but I also think they would look darling in a nursery.

Now through Sunday you get an extra 30% off EVERYTHING at J.Crew Factory with code XOFACTORY, which means this darling silk tee is just $45!

Happy weekend!

Happy Valentine's Day!

I've always secretly loved Valentine's Day, but it seems like it's uncool to admit that.  Like you're supposed to rant about what a made-up holiday it is, a commercial conspiracy theory between the card and candy companies out to get men to open their wallets.  And while there is definitely that side to the holiday {I'm not interested in the cheesy stuffed animals and cheap chocolates and leopard underwear staring me down at CVS}, I love the girlish bliss of it all.  An excuse to wear pink and eat sweets and buy pretty paper.

I think what I like most about it is how low-pressure it is and how it really can be whatever you make of it.  On Christmas and birthdays I always feel the need to go all out with gifts and decorating, but Valentine's Day, for us anyways, is low-budget and low-key.  Just making a little extra effort to show you care.

My two favorite Valentine's memories are actually from my single days.  My last year of college, my bestie and I organized a potluck dinner for all of our single girlfriends.  We ate like queens {goat cheese stuffed chicken, mac and cheese, cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries...mmmmmm}, drank Champagne, watched 'First Wives Club', and just enjoyed each other's company.  Then there was my first Valentine's Day all alone in my first apartment.  I splurged on a nice bottle of red wine and a feast from KFC {don't hate} and watched chick flicks on my teeny tiny sofa.

If you've been in the closet about your feelings for Valentine's Day, today's the day to come out into the light.  Wear pink. Eat chocolates. Send cute cards.

Happy Valentine's Day, sweet readers!

Friday Favorites

The Super Bowl is upon us! Since my husband's beloved Ravens are playing, today's Friday Favorites is all things Maryland.  Crabcakes and football, y'all!
A different take on the more traditional crab dip that is served at every party in Maryland.  I ADORE traditional crap dip, but this crab rangoon dip would definitely bring a welcome twist to the dip line-up.

Who doesn't love party printables, especially when they're free?! Simply Create Designs has a fabulous collection up for grabs.

Old Bay hummus {or hoo-mus, as Ina says}.  I mean, hello?!?! How did I not think of this? We already put Old Bay on EVERYTHING else.  I could probs polish off an entire recipe of this.

For those of us {cough, me, cough cough} who don't feel the need to wear ridiculously overpriced NFL-logoed gear, a purple cashmere sweater will do juuuuuuuust fine. Bonus: it's on sale for $47.99 with code MOREPLEASE!

No Maryland gathering is complete without Berger cookies, a.k.a. my one true love. If you're like most of America and you can't buy them locally, you can go it your own with Blue-Eyed Baker's homemade version.  Or you can order as many as your heart desires from the Bergers website. THESE ARE THE BEST COOKIES EVER MADE.  Don't say I didn't warn you...

Here we go, Ravens!

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day 2Hard to believe that Valentine's Day is less than a month away!  We don't make Valentine's a big to-do in our house.  I make a nice dinner at home {no prix-fixe menus for us, thanks} and we normally just get each other a small little something.  It doesn't help that I'm not a huge fan of cut flower arrangements, especially at Valentine's Day.  I'd much rather have a potted bloom to enjoy for months!  Here are a few things I wouldn't mind receiving...

Happy Anniversary

One week ago today, we celebrated our first wedding anniversary.  Well, perhaps "marked" is a more appropriate term than "celebrated" since I was in a hotel in downtown DC for a work conference, watching Hurricane Sandy blow through town.  Because of those circumstances, I wasn't able to do a proper anniversary post.  I'm still working on organizing all of my thoughts on our first year of marriage, so today I'm just recycling my wedding pictures post.  Happy anniversary, M!

Menu Monday is getting ditched today in exchange for something much more fun {in my opinion}: our wedding!

Our wedding was featured on Snippet and Ink last Thursday, but I thought I'd share more pictures from our wonderful day.  Prepare yourself for photo overload!

It was truly our dream wedding!
